September Native Plant of the Month
Butterfly Milkweed is
a beautiful and important plant throughout the state as the larval host for the Monarch, Queen, & Soldier Butterflies.
Featuring showy orange flowers that sway in the breeze, Butterflyweed propagates best by seed. It is not the easiest plant ro grow partyl because the caterpillars will eat the entire plant overnight! It also experiences a great deal of pest pressure from aphids. With water, castile soap, & neem oil, it can be successful.
Our September Native Plant of the Month is really a plant that everyone should have in their Florida garden. The best practice is to have a lot of it! But make sure you have the native plant.
Milkweed can be a controversial plant for discussion. As such, I recommend reading my previous blogpost on the topic regarding the reasons not to grow tropical milkweed!
