Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is an evergreen (deciduous in the north) vine with tubular, reddish-orange blooms that mature into berries. The flowers atrract bees, butterflies, and birds. Hummingbirds love to feed on nectar from the flowers, which is also edible for humans with a subtly sweet taste. The flowers last almost all year here in Florida 9b. While coral honeysuckle can grow on the ground, trellising the vines promotes blooms. The flowers mature into berries that are not edible for humans, but are a favorite of cardinals who love the seeds. Propagation is possible by seeding, cutting, and air layering. This easy-to-grow FL native is a beautiful addition to any yard.
